A funding model that guarantees our scientific independence
The Institut Pasteur's funding sources are shown below.
In descending order as a share of overall funding :
Donations from individuals, foundations and companies account for 33.9% of our income. We therefore have your generosity to thank for over a third of our total funding. Philanthropy has long been a key source of income, raising around €130 million in 2025, which allows us to fund cutting-edge research, support strategic infrastructure, and attract the world's top talent.
Account for 22.9% of our funding. They are awarded by French and international funding bodies (ANR, European Commission, foundations), recognizing scientific excellence through peer selection. Our main funders are the French National Research Agency (ANR), the French Foundation for Medical Research (FRM) and ANRS-MIE.
Account for 22.5% of our funding. The Institut Pasteur has a duty to hold assets, built up over time, and make them grow. Efficient asset management generates income and guarantees our ability to fulfill missions of public interest over the long term. The institute has four main types of productive asset: property to let, long-term financial investments, equity securities, cash.
Account for 16.1% of our income. They support the Institut Pasteur's core missions, in particular its public service activities including health surveillance operations carried out by the fourteen National Reference Centers (CNRs).
Makes up 4.6% of our funding. It is raised from industrial partnerships, R&D cooperation agreements and services such as diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutic treatments. These activities turn our work into benefits for society, while also generating income to fund future research.
