During this course, we will discuss the demographic, socioeconomical, climatic and environmental factors associated with the emergence of infectious diseases, the methods for epidemic control, the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing efforts for pandemic preparedness.
Objectives of the course
The aim of the course is to provide the audience with expert knowledge in infectious disease epidemiology and microbiology in the context of pandemics. At the end of the course, students should understand which pathogens represent the main pandemic threat(s); understand the key components of an outbreak investigation and its multidisciplinary response; be able to plan and undertake an outbreak investigation; be aware of the main actors involved in pandemic response at national and international level and their respective roles; and be able to provide a critical analysis of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and identify the lessons for the future.
