Pasteur Courses

Vaccines and Antibodies for Pandemic Preparedness and Global Health

This intensive two-week advanced course provides a comprehensive overview of modern vaccinology and antibody discovery, integrating immunology, structural biology, clinical development, regulatory science, manufacturing, and global policy. Designed for PhD scientists, clinicians, pharmacists, veterinarians, and global health professionals, VAPPGH bridges fundamental science and real-world implementation to accelerate next-generation vaccines and antibodies for pandemic preparedness. Funding opportunities: If you are a member of the Pasteur Network (see list), consider applying for the Calmette & Yersin Study Grant. The deadline for applying for the scholarship is the same as the deadline for applying for the course.

Description

Emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and rapidly evolving pathogens continue to challenge global health security. The ability to design, test, manufacture, and deploy vaccines and monoclonal antibodies at unprecedented speed is now a cornerstone of pandemic preparedness.

Through focused deep dives into key pathogens, including influenza, Mpox, SARS-CoV-2, flaviviruses, and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, participants will follow a coherent learning path from pathogen biology and immune responses to vaccine platforms, monoclonal antibody innovation, clinical trials, and translational strategies.

The VAPPGH program delivers a comprehensive and translational journey across modern vaccinology and antibody innovation, covering:

  • From discovery to deployment: Key steps in vaccine and monoclonal antibody development — from antigen design and preclinical validation to clinical trials.
  • Pathogen evolution & pandemic lessons: Understanding viral and bacterial emergence, immune escape, and what COVID-19 taught us about speed, scalability, and global response.
  • Pathogen-focused deep dives: Expert-led case studies in vaccine and antibody R&D for emerging viral pathogens, vector-borne diseases and antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria.
  • Innovation in antigen and antibody design: Structure-based vaccinology, mRNA platforms, AI-driven discovery, and next-generation immunogen engineering.
  • Correlates of protection & immunomonitoring: Defining protective immunity and translating immune signatures into regulatory endpoints.
  • Manufacturing, regulatory science & global deployment: Industrial scale-up, quality control, regulatory pathways, and preparedness frameworks.

Dedicated sessions explore correlates of protection, immunomonitoring, industrial manufacturing, regulatory frameworks, pandemic preparedness, One Health, and vaccine hesitancy.

Together, these modules provide an integrated vision of how vaccines and antibodies are conceived, developed, validated, and implemented to protect global health.

The course also includes discussions with external experts and will be based on a partnership with the HSeT Foundation which has developed an e-learning website dedicated to the course

The course brings together leading academic, clinical, and industry experts to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to accelerate the development of next-generation vaccines and antibodies for future pandemics and global health challenges.

Target audience: This course is dedicated to people with a medical or scientific training background who are interested in all aspects of this new discipline: medical doctors, scientists, physicians, pharmacists, veterinarians and other health professionals.
